About Me

Birth can be hard work, it can be intense, it can make you question yourself. But, at the same time, birth doesn’t have to be scary or distressing. It doesn’t have to ruin the joy of your pregnancy.

Labour and birth can be totally AMAZING. It can fill you with joy, make you realise the power and strength of your mind and body.

I teach Hypnobirthing because I want every pregnant woman to feel CONFIDENT, CALM and COURAGEOUS about her forthcoming birth.

I want her to ENJOY her labour and birth and know she has CHOICES and is IN CONTROL every step of the way. I also want her birth partner to know exactly what to do to SUPPORT her in the very best way.

I want her to feel in awe of herself after giving birth – at her accomplishment, at her strength and power.

Labour, birth and motherhood are some of the most transformative moments for us as women. These events have the ability to change us as a person forever. A positive birth experience is the key to starting motherhood in the very best way.

MEET RACHEL

Rachel Akehurst is the founder, face and font of wisdom behind Lionheart Hypnobirthing. She is married with one child and is passionate about all things pregnancy and parenthood – in particular, a woman’s right to make informed choices throughout pregnancy and childbirth.

Rachel is a former midwife, newborn observationalist and health visitor. She retrained as a hypnobirthing teacher following her own personal experience of childbirth and a system that made her feel bullied and ignored:

“I trained and qualified as midwife during 2006 because I was absolutely fascinated by pregnancy and childbirth. Sadly, my experiences working AS A MIDWIFE within a busy maternity unit left me disappointed; I didn’t have the time to talk to, and – most importantly – listen to women. I was saddened by the medicalisation of birth; with so many unnecessary interventions being offered to women and THEM not realising they had choices.

Because of this, my own pregnancy was plagued with fear. I put off having my own baby for many years; what I had seen on labour ward had made me extremely anxious and I envisaged my own birth to be very medicalised, painful and distressing. When I found out I was pregnant, my first thought – sadly – was not one of joy but intense anxiety. This was further reinforced by countless birth horror stories which people seem to delight in telling pregnant women”.

Eventually, Rachel decided to learn hypnobirthing in an attempt to relax, empower herself and turn things around. As you can probably tell, it worked pretty well! In fact, Rachel had the most incredible birth as a result of her hypnobirthing training:

“I was definitely sceptical about Hypnobirthing at first….but it all started to make sense very quickly. From the moment I starting to learn hypnobirthing, my whole perspective on labour and birth changed.  I began to believe in my own ability to give birth naturally and started to feel excited about giving birth. MY HUSBAND PHIL KNEW HOW TO LOOK AFTER ME THROUGHOUT LABOUR AND HE GOT SO MUCH CONFIDENCE FROM HYPNOBIRTHING. My labour and birth were wonderful. I felt very strong, safe and in control”.

Following the birth of her son, Rachel became quite poorly. Her mental health plummeted, and she developed serious anxiety and even suicidal thoughts.

She decided to retrain as a hypnobirthing teacher so that she could share her newfound knowledge and experience with other parents-to-be and their birthing partners, and also to bring greater creativity, flexibility and fulfillment to her life:

“I absolutely love what I do but the best thing about it is hearing the positive difference that my hypnobirthing courses make for my clients. On a very personal note, I started Lionheart Hypnobirthing because I wanted more creativity and fun in my life – especially after being so ill postnatally.

I also felt I had so much professional hands-on experience and knowledge to offer other women and families. With all my heart, I wanted to help them have a positive and empowered birth experience. In my darkest days of postnatal illness, I would remind myself how strong I was giving birth and it literally saved my life – that security in knowing that I could do anything. I want to support others, not only in birth, but also as they transition to parenthood. Had I had a traumatic birth, as well as being so poorly afterwards, I’m not sure I would still be here, or at least have recovered so well. I know I have the skills and expertise to support women through the monumental stages of pregnancy and parenthood and I am forever grateful to have the opportunity to do so”.
